More Ozone Details
My mentor, Dr. Lamberto Re’s 2024 review, “The Molecular Key to Understanding the Medical Ozone Action”, characterizes medical ozone as “one of the most interesting and safe integrative options” capable of complementing a variety of conventional therapies, particularly in the context of aging, inflammation and redox stress.
In short, ozone therapy is not a miracle cure, it is a well-selected adjunctive tool, used as part of a broader integrative care plan.
How It Works (Mechanisms at a glance)
-
Ozone reacts with blood components, producing mild oxidative by-products (hydrogen peroxide, lipid-oxidation products) that act as signaling molecules to up-regulate endogenous antioxidant systems (e.g., Nrf2-ARE pathway) and reduce chronic oxidative burden.
-
It may improve microvascular oxygen delivery, modulate inflammation by down-regulating NF-κB and pro-inflammatory cytokines, and promote improved endothelial function, immune function, and tissue metabolism.
-
In pain and musculoskeletal applications, ozone injections or systemic administration have shown anti-inflammatory, analgesic and tissue-healing support effects in clinical studies.
Why I Offer It
Ozone therapy fits amazingly well into my approach of supporting the body's own healing capacity and resilience. Specifically:
-
Many of my patients face chronic low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, metabolic imbalance or impaired tissue repair, which manifest into the conditions I treat most often, namely cardiovascular disease, poor metabolic health, and unhealthy aging in general. Medical ozone therapy can powerful support the foundational mechanisms underlying these conditions in unique ways that are not attainable via nutrition, lifestyle medicine, other naturopathic therapies, or sometimes even medications.
-
Many of my patients reach out to me for support because they cannot tolerate the medications they have been prescribed or are simply uninterested in using them. While in my integrative practice I support the use of medications if/when needed, I also recognize they are not always the best or preferred option and so other powerful tools can be very helpful. Medical ozone therapy offers a minimally invasive adjunct, gentle yet powerful adjunct in such cases and is incredibly versatile.
What to Expect
-
Initial visit: I will review your medical history, labs, medications/supplements, and discuss whether ozone therapy is an appropriate adjunct for you.
-
Safety screening: I will assess for any potential contraindications and run baseline labs if needed, and explain realistic outcomes and limitations.
-
Treatment session: Depending on your goals, I will select the appropriate route (e.g., major auto-hemotherapy, minor auto-hemotherapy, or musculoskeletal support) and proceed.
-
Monitoring and integration: I will track your response and make any needed adjustments at subsequent sessions, and integrate ozone with the rest of your plan. Some people will have a series of treatments and others just one or two, or as needed. Many people choose to support their immune health and cardiovascular health with general maintenance treatments once every 4-6 weeks.
Safety, Contraindications & Considerations
Safety is my top priority. The medical ozone protocols I adhere to follow recognized guidelines which emphasis on correct dosing, high-quality equipment, and sterile technique. Dialnet+1
Some key points to consider:
-
When done correctly, medical ozone therapy is incredibly safe. I have been using it for nearly a decade without any problems, and my mentor, Dr. Re has administered over 75,000 treatments in his career, also without any issues.
-
Ozone therapy is not a replacement for conventional medical care, but an adjunctive tool.
-
Contraindications may include: uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, recent major bleeding or surgery, certain types of aneurysms, G6PD deficiency, pregnancy, and some more severe cardiovascular instabilities. I will screen for these accordingly at our initial visit.
-
While many studies indicate very low incidence of adverse events when properly administered, any medical procedure carries risk. Studies consistently show that adverse events are rare when trained providers use correct dosing and equipment.
-
It is important that you understand that this is offered within a naturopathic/integrative context and that some uses of ozone therapy remain in an adjunctive or investigational realm.
Who Might Benefit
Ozone therapy may be a good fit if you are seeking support in:
-
Enhancing mitochondrial/energy function and tissue repair
-
Reducing chronic inflammatory burden and oxidative stress
-
Improving recovery from intense exercise training, illness, and stress
-
Supporting degenerative joint or musculoskeletal issues (in combination with lifestyle, nutrition, movement, etc)
-
Augmenting circulation and endothelial function, and overall resilience in the context of cardiovascular or metabolic risk-reduction protocols
Disclaimer
Ozone therapy is a complementary modality and does not replace conventional medical diagnosis or treatment. Results vary by individual; you must consult with your physician and disclose any medications, supplements, or health conditions. While the research shows promise, it remains in the integrative-medicine realm and may not be universally endorsed by all medical authorities.
